LAIT911 Fire is a Los Angeles-based disaster response team founded in 2021, focused on wildfire and flood risk. We’re expanding our public-facing presence and building a stronger, more engaging social media identity and we’re looking for a volunteer Social Media Specialist who wants to help shape that story.
The Social Media Specialist will help LAIT911 communicate clearly, calmly, and creatively across platforms. You’ll create short-form videos, written posts, graphics, and other content that explain what’s happening in Los Angeles — and help build a consistent, trustworthy social brand.
This role is ideal for someone who:
- Is comfortable on camera
- Has a high-quality phone for filming
- Communicates clearly
- Enjoys social media storytelling
- Wants experience in public safety communication
- Thrives in a small, mission-driven environment
Some in-person collaboration is required. Residing in Central LA, Downtown, or the SFV is preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce 3–5 short-form videos per week (TikTok, IG Reels, Shorts), based on scripts or talking points provided.
- Create supporting written, image, and graphic content for use across LAIT911 social channels.
- Maintain a consistent brand image, voice, and tone across platforms.
- Share accurate, calm, and timely public-safety information — no speculation or rumors.
- Engage with the community online in a professional, neutral manner.
- Collaborate weekly with team members for planning and feedback.
- Meet deadlines, communicate early and clearly, and uphold high accuracy standards.
Content Examples (you’ll create things like):
Video topics:
- “Why helicopters circle neighborhoods at night in LA”
- “What ‘Fire Weather Watch’ actually means for Angelenos”
- “Brush fire near ______ — what happened and what to know”
- “Why some earthquakes roll and others hit sharply”
- “Why fire engines respond to medical calls”
Written & graphic content:
- Simple incident explainers
- Fire weather snapshots
- Preparedness tips
- Breaking-down emergency terms
- Safety checklists
- Maps, visuals, and quick info cards
- Posts highlighting disaster operations activity or community work
Brand & engagement:
- Building a consistent LAIT911 look + feel
- Encouraging community discussion
- Reacting to daily LA incidents with clarity and professionalism
Requirements
- Not shy on camera; confident speaking clearly and calmly
- High-quality phone capable of recording clean video and audio
- Strong communication skills — this is incredibly important
- Ability to follow scripts and accuracy guidelines
- Basic video editing skills (mobile editing is fine)
- Reliable, communicative, and able to meet deadlines
- Familiar with Los Angeles geography
- Available for limited in-person collaboration (Central/DTLA/SFV ideal)
Commitment
- 3–5 hours per week
- 6-month minimum commitment
What You’ll Gain
- Real-world experience in emergency communications and digital public safety outreach
- A growing portfolio of video, written, and visual content
- Collaboration with agency partners, field teams, and communications professionals
- Opportunities to interact with public-safety leadership (PIOs, fire personnel, community partners)
- Exposure to real PR workflows, media coordination, and audience growth
- A meaningful role that genuinely helps Los Angeles residents stay informed and safe
- Opportunities for continuous education, training, and certifications.
- Awards, team lunches, meetings, gatherings, and exclusive events.
- Reimbursement for related expenses and equipment.
- Access to first-responder/group discounts.
