The Volunteer Wildland Fire Assessor plays an essential role within LAIT911 Fire in assessing properties in high wildfire risk areas to identify potential wildfire hazards and promote mitigation strategies. Volunteer staff work closely with homeowners to educate them on wildfire risks and offer practical recommendations to enhance their property’s resilience against fires. With training and certification provided by LAIT911 through the Wildland Fire Assessment Program (WFAP), you’ll contribute to making Los Angeles communities safer.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct property assessments in high-risk wildfire areas to identify hazards.
- Educate homeowners on wildfire risks and steps to reduce those risks.
- Document assessment findings and offer actionable recommendations for wildfire mitigation.
- Collaborate with fire departments, local agencies, and other stakeholders to promote fire safety strategies.
- Ensure compliance with WFAP best practices and maintain accurate records of assessments.
Commitment
- Volunteer at least 16 hours per month (flexible scheduling to fit your availability)
- Attend, complete and pass required training and certification (provided by LAIT911)
- Attend regularly scheduled monthly team meetings.
Training
Volunteer staff will receive comprehensive training and certification provided by LAIT911 through the Wildland Fire Assessment Program (WFAP). The training will cover wildfire behavior, property hazard assessments, mitigation strategies, and public education techniques to ensure you’re equipped to perform effective wildfire risk evaluations. Requirements
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Physical ability to traverse and assess properties in various terrain conditions.
- Strong communication skills for public engagement and education.
- Ability to work independently, as a team, and maintain professionalism.
- Must reside within a 30-mile radius of Los Angeles.
- Valid California driver’s license with no recent infractions and a clean criminal record.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in firefighting, forestry, or emergency management is a plus.
- CPR/First Aid certification (can be obtained post-application with LAIT911 assistance).
